The Department of Justice reportedly issued grand jury subpoenas on Tuesday to several of Minnesota’s top Democratic leaders, including Gov. Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and Attorney General Keith Ellison.

According to sources cited by Fox News, the DOJ served subpoenas to five state government offices as part of a federal investigation into alleged conspiracy, coercion, and obstruction of federal law enforcement during Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minnesota. The FBI, acting on behalf of the DOJ, reportedly requested specific records and communications from these offices.

This follows reports last week that federal authorities were investigating Walz and Frey for allegedly interfering with law enforcement efforts.

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told Fox News that the lawmakers’ public opposition to ICE operations could be considered “borderline criminal.” He said, “When the governor or the mayor threaten our officers, when the mayor suggests that he’s encouraging citizens to call 911 when they see ICE officers, that is very close to a federal crime.”

In response, Walz criticized the Trump administration, calling it an effort to “weaponize the justice system.” On the social media platform X, he wrote: “Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic. The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.”

Frey also posted on X, stating, “This is an obvious attempt to intimidate me for standing up for Minneapolis, local law enforcement, and residents against the chaos and danger this Administration has brought to our city. I will not be intimidated. My focus remains where it’s always been: keeping our city safe.”

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Monday that the state leaders were partly responsible for unrest in Minneapolis. “Jacob Frey and Tim Walz have whipped these rioters into a frenzy and turned them loose to wreak havoc on Minneapolis,” she said. Jackson added, “Frey and Walz should be ashamed for inciting such chaos, but the Trump Administration will continue enforcing the law.”

The situation escalated over the weekend when a group of protesters disrupted a service at Christian Cities Church in St. Paul, harassing those in attendance. DOJ officials said they plan to charge individuals involved, including former CNN host Don Lemon, who claimed to be covering the event as a journalist.

Harmeet Dhillon, U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, said Lemon will face charges under the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871. She added that he admitted to knowing in advance “exactly what was going to happen inside that facility.” Dhillon warned that federal authorities are prepared to act decisively against anyone involved in similar incidents.
