A Georgia surgeon has been arrested after allegedly confronting and threatening a patient following a phone call about her medical procedure.

Steven Muscoreil was working as a general surgeon at St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia, a small town in northeast Georgia, on Jan. 8. Earlier that day, he performed a procedure on a patient and later spoke with her by phone while she was recovering, according to an incident report obtained by local NBC affiliate WYFF.

Police say the patient reported that Muscoreil became angry during the call and raised his voice after she expressed concerns about the procedure. Shortly afterward, Muscoreil allegedly entered her hospital room and charged toward her in an aggressive manner, as if he were going to strike her.

Two nurses told police they witnessed the incident. According to their statements, Muscoreil got close to the patient’s face and began yelling, with his voice loud enough to be heard from the hallway. One nurse said she intervened physically by pushing him away from the patient, who was confined to her hospital bed.

The nurses’ accounts matched the patient’s description of the encounter. Authorities did not release specific details about what was discussed during the phone conversation.

Muscoreil was arrested and charged with simple assault. He was booked into the Franklin County Detention Center.

In a statement to local Fox affiliate WHNS, St. Mary’s Health Care System said Muscoreil was not an employee of St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital and is no longer providing medical services at the facility.
