Speaking at a GOP retreat in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, President Trump mixed humor with political warnings during his remarks. At one point, he joked about the first lady’s reaction to his dancing at public events, according to The Hill.
Trump told the audience that Melania Trump disapproves of the dancing, saying she considers it “unpresidential.” Recounting the exchange, he said she once asked him to imagine Franklin D. Roosevelt dancing. After pausing for laughter, Trump responded that there was historical context she may not have considered. As Mediaite noted, Roosevelt was paralyzed from the waist down after contracting polio.
The speech also took a more serious turn. Trump warned Republican lawmakers that a poor showing in the upcoming midterm elections could lead Democrats to pursue impeachment, Reuters reported. He urged Republicans to win the midterms, saying that if they do not, Democrats would “find a reason” to impeach him.
