British and French Jets Hit ISIS Weapons Site in Syria
This past weekend, European fighter jets were active in the Middle East while global attention was on the U.S. operation that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
On Saturday, British and French aircraft carried out a joint strike on an Islamic State (IS) weapons storage facility near Palmyra, Syria.
The UK Ministry of Defence said in a statement, “Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined French aircraft in targeting an underground arms cache used by IS. Careful intelligence analysis indicated the facility stored weapons and explosives and was located in the mountains just north of Palmyra. Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike access tunnels to the facility. Initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully.”

No civilian casualties have been reported, and all aircraft returned safely.
UK Defense Secretary John Healey said, “This action demonstrates the UK’s leadership and commitment to standing with our allies to prevent any resurgence of Daesh and their violent ideologies in the Middle East.”
According to RTE, “The British Ministry of Defense confirmed cooperation with France in striking the underground facility, likely used by IS to store weapons. The area surrounding the facility has no civilian habitation, and the strikes were completed successfully.”
