Dog trainers admit these breeds are (almost) impossible to train

The three most stubborn dog breeds — and how to handle them

Training a dog is rarely simple, and for certain breeds, it can feel downright impossible. So which pups test even the most experienced trainers? Here’s a look at three of the most notoriously stubborn breeds — and why they can be so challenging.

Dog training is essential for a happy home, but not every dog responds the same way. Some are eager to please, while others have personalities that push patience to its limits. British dog trainer Matt Atherton of Canine Training recently shared the breeds that challenge him the most. Here’s a closer look at his top picks and the quirks that make them uniquely difficult — yet lovable.

1. Siberian Husky: the independent free spirit

At the top of Atherton’s list is the Siberian Husky — a strikingly beautiful, high-energy breed with a fiercely independent streak. Originally bred to pull sleds across icy terrain, Huskies have boundless stamina and need constant activity to stay focused.

Huskies don’t naturally seek human approval, preferring to follow their own instincts. Their combination of intelligence, energy, and stubbornness can make even basic commands a challenge.

Training a Husky requires patience, creativity, and consistent engagement. Short, varied sessions that channel their energy constructively are key. Without the right effort, commands are likely to be ignored — no matter how many treats are offered.

2. Dachshund: small dog, giant attitude

Next is the Dachshund, a small dog with a surprisingly big personality. Bred for hunting, these determined pups have strong-willed, persistent natures. Traits that once made them great at tracking badgers can make obedience training a real test of patience.

Dachshunds are prone to boredom, which often leads to mischief — excessive barking, digging, or other stubborn behaviors. Consistent, positive reinforcement, along with plenty of mental and physical stimulation, is essential to keep them balanced and well-behaved.

3. Shar-Pei: the strong-minded guardian

Rounding out the top three is the Shar-Pei, instantly recognizable for its wrinkled skin and distinct temperament. This ancient Chinese breed is loyal, protective, and, at times, challenging to train.

Shar-Peis’ cautious nature makes them excellent watchdogs but requires careful management. Without proper socialization, they may develop fear or aggression toward strangers. Successful training blends firmness with gentleness — push too hard, and they shut down; earn their trust, and you gain a loyal, devoted companion.

Tips for training stubborn dogs

Even the most challenging breeds can thrive with the right approach. Early socialization, clear boundaries, and plenty of mental and physical activity are critical.

Remember: every dog is unique. Some may surprise you by being easier — or harder — than expected. With patience, consistency, and plenty of love, even the most headstrong dogs can become affectionate, well-behaved members of the family.
