Powerful wind gusts tore through upstate New York on Monday, uprooting trees and knocking people off their feet, according to eyewitness accounts and video footage.

One dramatic video showed Hamburg resident Diane Miller being blown off her feet when she opened the door at her daughter’s home. Winds were reported to be as strong as 70 mph at the time, according to WKBW.

“It happened so fast, I couldn’t believe it,” Miller said. “I never imagined I’d be lifted into the air like that.” As she opened the screen door, a sudden gust sent her tumbling down the steps and into nearby bushes.

“I opened the door and the wind just took me,” she said. “I’ve never been in a storm with winds this strong, so I didn’t expect anything like that to happen.”

In South Buffalo, Tyler Gall narrowly avoided serious injury when a tree collapsed onto his work truck moments after he stepped outside. Gall, who installs shower and jacuzzi systems, said the close call left a lasting impression.

“If I had still been in the truck, I would have been crushed,” he said. “You really can’t take any day for granted.” He added that many people underestimate the force of strong winds until they experience them firsthand. “It’s hurricane-level power. It’s not something to mess with.”

The intense storm system swept across much of the Great Lakes and the Northeast, placing more than 40 million people under various winter weather alerts.

At Buffalo Niagara International Airport, a wind gust was recorded at 79 mph on Monday—just shy of the city’s all-time record of 82 mph set on February 16, 1967, according to WIVB4.
