Kim Kardashian is facing criticism from PETA over her recent Christmas gifts for her children. The reality star shared on Instagram that each of her four kids, ages 6 to 12, received a Pomeranian puppy for the holidays. According to People, the family already owns at least three Pomeranians.

PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk commented that “puppies are not plushies” and said Kardashian was “being rightly slammed on social media” for the choice. Newkirk added that Kardashian “missed the chance to be a spokesperson for shelter pups” by not adopting from a rescue.

Newkirk also addressed Kardashian’s sister Khloé, who gifted her family a black Labrador puppy on Christmas. She encouraged the sisters to “call PETA or a local shelter the next time” they want to expand their households, and suggested they could “make some amends” by having their children volunteer at shelters or supporting adoption events and spay programs to help combat the issue of homeless puppies.

This isn’t the first time Kardashian has drawn criticism from the animal rights group. Recently, she faced backlash for carrying a vintage elephant-skin Hermès Birkin bag in a scene from the Hulu legal drama All’s Fair. PETA pointed out that the bag was made from the skin of an elephant killed on a safari in the 1980s.
