WATCH: Justice Department Releases Recreation Video of Jeffrey Epstein Trying to Kill Himself
The Justice Department on Monday released a computer-generated recreation video of Jeffrey Epstein inside his jail cell attempting to take his own life.
The 10-second video, timestamped August 10, 2019, at 4:29 a.m. ET, depicts Epstein sitting on the floor of his cell. He was later found dead at 6:30 a.m. ET that same day.
Prosecutors have previously stated that the two CCTV cameras positioned outside Epstein’s cell were not working at the time.
Epstein, the 66-year-old financier and convicted pedophile, had reportedly attempted suicide one week earlier in July 2019. The medical examiner ultimately ruled his August 2019 death a suicide by hanging. Reports indicate that Epstein tied a bedsheet to the bunk bed and wrapped it around his neck. The autopsy also noted a broken hyoid bone, which some experts say is more commonly associated with strangulation in homicide cases. Certain autopsy photos led some observers to speculate that a wire may have been used.
In January 2020, prosecutors informed a judge that previously missing surveillance footage outside Epstein’s cell on the night of his July suicide attempt had been found, but they later stated the footage had been destroyed due to a record-keeping error.
An FBI memo released over the summer concluded that Epstein did not maintain a client list for blackmail purposes and confirmed that he died by suicide in August 2019.
Despite official findings, many people remain skeptical of the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death, citing various inconsistencies and coincidences revealed after the fact.
