A Florida man allegedly “started a countdown from five to one” while pointing a rifle at a wounded man and demanding his keys before opening fire, police say.

Sylvester Grice-Jordan, 32, faces charges of second-degree murder and using a weapon during a felony in the death of Yasmany Rodriguez Fernandez. According to a probable cause affidavit, Miami Gardens police were called just after 7 p.m. Thursday to the 3300 block of NW 177th Terrace for a shooting.

When officers arrived, they say they saw Grice-Jordan holding a rifle. He complied with orders to drop the weapon. Officers then found Fernandez dead on the porch from multiple gunshot wounds. Inside the home were Fernandez’s wife, stepdaughter, and 8-month-old baby, all unharmed.

The stepdaughter told police she had been in a relationship with Grice-Jordan and that they had lived in the home since April. After ongoing conflicts, Fernandez’s wife asked Grice-Jordan to leave on Dec. 15. He left his dog behind, and the family later asked him to come pick it up after it had soiled the home, according to the affidavit.

The encounter escalated when Grice-Jordan returned to retrieve the dog. He briefly entered the home and had an altercation with Fernandez. Both men were reportedly armed at the time, though neither was holding a gun during the initial dispute. Fernandez followed Grice-Jordan to the porch, where tensions continued, according to police.

Inside the home, the wife, stepdaughter, and baby heard gunfire. Fernandez reportedly shouted that he had been shot and instructed them to call 911. Surveillance footage captured Grice-Jordan demanding Fernandez’s keys and asking why he had a gun.

“The defendant then told the victim he had five seconds and started a countdown from five to one as he was still holding the rifle at the victim’s head while he lay on the ground,” the affidavit said. Grice-Jordan allegedly fired several more shots.

Grice-Jordan was arrested and taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remains held without bond. A hearing is scheduled for Monday morning.
