American Rapper Gets 9 Months in Romania
American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian court for drug possession, more than a year after appearing at a music festival in the country. Romanian police stopped Khalifa in July 2024 after he allegedly smoked cannabis onstage during his performance at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinești, a seaside resort in Constanța County, according to the Associated Press.
Prosecutors said the artist, whose legal name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was found with more than 18 grams of cannabis and admitted to using some of it during his performance. On Thursday, the Constanța Court of Appeal upheld his conviction and issued the sentence for “possession of dangerous drugs for personal consumption without legal right,” Romania’s national news agency Agerpres reported. The ruling is final.
Romania enforces some of the strictest drug laws in Europe. Cannabis possession for personal use is illegal and can carry penalties ranging from fines to prison sentences of up to two years. It remains unclear whether Romanian authorities will pursue extradition, as Khalifa is a U.S. citizen and does not live in Romania.
The 38-year-old rapper from Pittsburgh gained widespread recognition with his breakout mixtape Kush + Orange Juice and is known for hits such as “Young, Wild & Free.” He was also previously associated with a YouTube viewing record for “See You Again,” featuring Charlie Puth.
