‘Unexpected deposit’: Man sent meth to bank using drive-thru tube during otherwise routine transaction
Jason Smith (Monroe County Sheriff's Office).
An Ohio man was arrested this week after sending a baggie of methamphetamine through a bank’s drive-thru pneumatic tube system, authorities in Monroe County reported.
Jason G. Smith, 46, was booked on drug-related charges earlier this week, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident took place on December 3 at a bank in Woodsfield, a small town about 120 miles east of Columbus. Bank staff discovered a “crystal-like substance consistent with methamphetamine” in a baggie that had been sent through one of the drive-thru air tubes, the sheriff’s office said.
Testing later confirmed the substance was methamphetamine.
Authorities said the investigation revealed that Smith had accidentally sent the bag through the drive-thru during a routine banking transaction. Officers with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources later located Smith in nearby Wayne Township.
After his detention, deputies used a police dog to search Smith’s truck and recovered additional suspected drugs and drug-related items, the sheriff’s office reported. Smith was then transported to the Monroe County Jail. Specific charges against him have not yet appeared on the Monroe County court system’s public docket.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office also used the press release to issue a public service reminder about handling illegal drugs.
“Illegal drugs don’t belong in bank drive-thrus — but they can be turned in at the Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Derek Norman said. “No charges, no handcuffs, just help. We’d much rather safely take them off the street than see another unexpected ‘deposit.’”
