A Chicago public school principal is under fire after defending a teacher who appeared to mock the recent assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, portraying the educator as a victim in a letter to parents while ignoring the allegations against her.
Lucy Martinez, a teacher at Nathan Hale Elementary School, was caught on video during a weekend “No Kings” protest in Chicago making a gesture that looked like a mock gunshot to the head. The footage, which quickly went viral, was widely interpreted as Martinez mocking Kirk’s assassination last month — an act that has sparked widespread outrage online.
In a message sent to the school community and reviewed by The Post, Principal Dawn Iles-Gomez condemned “threats” against Martinez but made no mention of her conduct or any disciplinary action taken.

“We were recently made aware of social media posts with language that resemble a potential threat to a staff member,” Iles-Gomez wrote.
“We take all potential threats extremely seriously to ensure the safety of our school community. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the CPS Office of Safety and Security have been notified, and CPD is currently investigating this situation further.”
The principal added that “additional safety support” from CPD officers would be provided before and after school hours “out of an abundance of caution.”
Critics accused the school of protecting the teacher while ignoring her offensive behavior. “Her fat a– needs to be fired,” said broadcaster Megyn Kelly on her SiriusXM show. “The school is making Martinez out to be a victim without even acknowledging her vile behavior mocking Charlie Kirk,” wrote former West Virginia legislator Derrick Evans on X.
Actor Braeden Sorbo also weighed in, writing, “Lucy Martinez, a K-8 teacher mimicking Charlie Kirk’s death at the No Kings protest. These people want you to care about a group chat leak,” referring to a recent controversy involving a leaked Young Republicans group chat containing disturbing comments about Hitler and sexual assault.
While unverified reports online claimed Martinez had been fired, the principal’s letter suggests she remains employed at Nathan Hale Elementary. The school has not responded to requests for comment. The Chicago Police Department confirmed it is aware of the matter but has not released further information.
