Mitt Romney’s brother, George Scott Romney, filed for divorce just four months before his estranged wife plunged to her death.
VALENCIA, Calif. — George Scott Romney, brother of Mitt Romney, filed for divorce just four months before his estranged wife, Carrie Elizabeth Romney, fell to her death from a California parking garage, court documents show.
The 81-year-old Romney initiated the divorce in June, citing “irreconcilable differences,” according to papers obtained by The Post. He sought to prevent the court from awarding support to either party, suggesting he wanted to limit any financial claims from his 64-year-old wife.
Legal filings indicate that both sides initially agreed to mediate property and support issues. Carrie Romney, however, countered with her own requests for alimony and coverage of legal fees, and she asked to have her name restored to a former last name, Dimas.

The divorce proceedings were ongoing when Carrie’s body was discovered Friday night at the base of a parking garage in Valencia, roughly 35 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities have not determined whether her death was accidental or intentional; the LA County medical examiner listed the cause as “deferred.” Police have stated that foul play is not suspected.

The couple had been married for just over eight years and had no children together, though both have children from prior marriages. Romney’s daughter, Ronna McDaniel, previously served as Chair of the Republican National Committee.
Despite dating since 2012, George Romney’s filings claimed the couple shared no property, though neighbors reported Carrie had recently been living in a $725,000 condo in Valencia. “She was quiet. Very nice,” a neighbor told The Post. George Romney was also seen walking in the neighborhood recently, wearing a hooded jacket during a rare cloudy day in Southern California.

Carrie Romney’s financial background included a 2001 Chapter 7 bankruptcy with a previous spouse. The divorce would have been Romney’s third.
George Romney is the older brother of Mitt Romney, former U.S. Senator from Utah and 2012 Republican presidential nominee who challenged President Trump in the primaries. He is also the son of former Michigan Governor and Nixon cabinet member George W. Romney. Over the years, George Romney pursued political ambitions, including a bid for Michigan attorney general in 1998 and considering a Senate run in 2013, though neither campaign was successful.
He also played a public role in 2012 by reading Michigan’s roll call at the Republican National Convention when Mitt Romney secured the nomination.
George Romney did not comment on the tragedy, but his brother Mitt issued a statement through PEOPLE, saying, “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives.”
