President Trump on Tuesday awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to Charlie Kirk, the slain activist and founder of Turning Point USA who inspired a generation of young conservatives and became a major force in shaping America’s political landscape.
The ceremony took place on what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday, just over a month after he was tragically shot while addressing a crowd at Utah Valley University. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, accepted the nation’s highest civilian honor on his behalf in the White House Rose Garden.
“Today we honor and remember a fearless warrior for liberty,” President Trump said during the ceremony. “A beloved leader who galvanized the next generation like nobody I’ve ever seen before, and an American patriot of the deepest conviction, the finest quality, and the highest caliber.”
Kirk was the first recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom during Trump’s second term, reflecting his close ties to the administration. The president also delivered a eulogy at Kirk’s funeral in September, calling him a “great American hero” and a “martyr for freedom.” Vice President JD Vance accompanied Kirk’s body home to Arizona aboard Air Force Two, alongside Erika Kirk.

Speaking about Kirk’s assassination, President Trump said, “He was taken from us in the prime of his life for boldly speaking the truth, for living his faith, and for relentlessly fighting for a better and stronger America.” He went on to condemn “far-left radicals” for what he called “acts of violence and terror” meant to silence their opponents. “They know they are failing,” he said. “They have the devil’s ideology.”
The president lightheartedly remarked that he nearly considered postponing the ceremony due to his trip to the Middle East. “I raced back halfway around the globe,” Trump said. “I was going to call Erika and say, ‘Erika, could you maybe move it to Friday?’ But I didn’t have the courage to call — because I heard today was Charlie’s birthday.”
In her remarks, Erika Kirk said, “Today we’re gathered not only to celebrate Charlie’s birthday, but to honor a truth that he gave his entire life to defend — and that’s freedom.” She added that her late husband might have run for president one day, “not out of ambition,” but only “if he believed that’s what his country needed.”
Charlie Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012, an organization that mobilized young conservatives and became a driving force in grassroots activism. President Trump has credited Kirk as one of the key figures behind his reelection success.
Hours before the ceremony, President Trump announced on Truth Social that the event was being moved from the East Room to the Rose Garden to accommodate what he described as an “incredibly large and enthusiastic crowd.”
