JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A chaotic scene erupted outside IDEA Charter School on Bassett Road Tuesday afternoon, marking the first enforcement of Florida’s new “Halo Law,” which prohibits interfering with law enforcement officers within 25 feet of their duties.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Erika McGriff, a habitual traffic offender with a revoked license, triggered the incident by leaving her car running in the middle of an intersection while picking up her child.

JSO Officer Randy Holton, assigned to the school as part of the Safe Schools program, approached McGriff. She allegedly denied ownership of the vehicle and attempted to walk away. Holton gave her a clear warning: “Listen, you can get a ticket or you can keep playing these games and go to jail. I’m going to give you one chance. You created the drama.”

When Holton tried to detain her, McGriff resisted physically, shouting for him not to touch her in front of her daughter. Video footage shows her cursing, struggling, and attempting to strike the officer. Sheriff Mike Waters confirmed that McGriff “punched and bit the officer,” leaving a visible bite mark on his arm.

Bodycam and bystander videos show McGriff continuing to resist, swinging at the officer, and being subdued multiple times on the wet pavement. At one point, Holton placed her in a headlock to regain control. Waters stated, “She violently resisted Officer Holton and eventually punched him repeatedly and bit him with such force that she left a bite impression on his forearm.” McGriff suffered cuts and scrapes during the struggle.

McGriff now faces three third-degree felony charges:

  • Battery on a law enforcement officer

  • Resisting an officer with violence

  • Operating a vehicle with a revoked license

Each charge carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years.

The incident also led to the first-ever arrests under Florida’s Halo Law. Several bystanders, including 59-year-old Anita Gibson and 36-year-old Jasmine Jefferson, approached the scene too closely and interfered with the officer’s duties. They were charged with violating the statute, which mandates a 25-foot safety zone around first responders.

The Halo Law, effective January 2025, aims to provide a safe perimeter for officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel to perform their duties without interference.
