ANN ARBOR, MI — As the University of Michigan prepared to host a political debate, local Democrat Fred Phillips chose an unusual method of getting ready: heading to the gun range.

Determined to sharpen his arguments against conservative viewpoints, Phillips spent more than an hour sighting in his rifle scope.

“Oh yeah, just a little debate prep,” Phillips joked to the range owner while setting up his firearm. “We’re supposed to talk abortion, immigration, and foreign policy. I want to make sure my aim is right.”

While his approach may seem unconventional, Democrats across the country say target practice has become their way of gearing up for heated debates. “It puts us in the right mindset to go toe-to-toe with conservatives in the marketplace of ideas,” said Democratic strategist Reggie Micks.

The debate, however, never took place. Officials confirmed it was canceled after Phillips’ rifle reportedly malfunctioned.
