A café in Sevilla, Spain was left with thousands of dollars in damages after a man allegedly set it on fire — all because he was refused mayonnaise. Now, condiment giant Hellmann’s is stepping in to cover the cost of repairs.
The bizarre incident took place on August 21 at Cafetería Las Postas. According to a post on the café’s Instagram, a man entered the shop and asked for mayonnaise for his sandwich. When staff told him they didn’t have any, he left — only to return minutes later with gasoline.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows the man dousing the café’s counter in fuel and igniting it, sending customers and staff fleeing as flames and smoke spread throughout the establishment.

“Imagine the fire that started,” owner José Antonio Caballero told Euro Weekly News. “There were children in front of him, people spending the afternoon. It was tremendous.”
Fortunately, no one was injured, but the fire caused an estimated €11,000 (around $11,700 USD) in damages.
The unusual, mayo-related arson caught the attention of Hellmann’s Spain, who offered to cover the repair costs. “Cafetería Las Postas: We’re sorry we weren’t there,” the company wrote in an Instagram post. “From now on, you can count on us. Let us take care of the repairs and make sure your sandwiches never run out of mayonnaise again.”

The café gratefully accepted the offer, responding: “Thank you so much @hellmanns_spain! It’s a pleasure to receive your help!”
The suspected arsonist was reportedly detained by bystanders at the scene and later arrested by police. According to local reports, he sustained burns during the incident and is currently being held without bail by a Spanish court.
