Howard Stern has joined a growing chorus of voices criticizing ABC’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel following his controversial comments in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s murder. Speaking on his SiriusXM radio show Monday, Stern condemned the network’s move, calling it a troubling response to government pressure.

“When the government says, ‘I’m not pleased with you, so we’re going to orchestrate a way to silence you,’ it’s the wrong direction for our country,” Stern said, according to Billboard. “It isn’t good.”

“You can’t support this kind of a move,” he continued. “I don’t care whether you like Jimmy or not. It’s about freedom of speech. If ABC wanted to fire Jimmy because they didn’t like him, or he had low ratings—they didn’t want to fire him. They’re being pressured by the United States government. We can’t have that, not if we’re going to have a democracy.”

Stern, who described his longtime friendship with Kimmel as “almost family,” also announced he was canceling his Disney+ subscription in protest—a stance shared by his co-host Robin Quivers, per USA Today.

Support for Kimmel has poured in from across the late-night landscape, with Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, and Jay Leno all voicing opposition to ABC’s suspension. Even Senator Ted Cruz, a frequent critic of Kimmel, spoke out against government interference in the matter, warning that such actions could ultimately backfire on conservatives.
