A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a 19-year-old Maryland woman whose body was discovered late last month in the South River near Annapolis.

Authorities say Hugo Hernandez-Mendez, a Guatemalan national residing in Bowie, Maryland, is facing charges of first- and second-degree murder in the killing of Dacara Thompson, who was reported missing on August 23.

Thompson, a resident of Prince George’s County, was last seen the night before, after telling her father she was going to get gas for her vehicle. Surveillance footage from a gas station shows Thompson speaking with Hernandez-Mendez before entering the passenger side of his vehicle. Police say the two then drove to his home.

Investigators believe Hernandez-Mendez may have sexually assaulted Thompson before killing her in his bedroom. According to court documents, he later disposed of her body by throwing it off a bridge in the Annapolis area.

Thompson’s car was found abandoned on August 24 with her purse inside. Her phone was missing and had been disabled. Her body, found naked on August 31 along a riverbank near Route 50, was identified through her tattoos. Medical examiners reported evidence of blunt-force trauma, including skull and facial fractures.

At a news conference, Prince George’s County Police Chief George Nader confirmed the charges and provided additional details on the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not yet released further information about a possible motive.
