Hikers High on Magic Mushrooms Rescued from New York Wilderness After Trip Goes Bad
Department of Environmental Conservation New York Four Hikers rescued from Giant Ledge in the Slide Mountain Wilderness
Four hikers had to be rescued from New York’s Slide Mountain Wilderness after one of them suffered a severe reaction to magic mushrooms, officials say.
The group was hiking about 20 miles west of Woodstock on August 29 when they called for help. One member had become incapacitated after consuming psilocybin mushrooms, a naturally occurring hallucinogen known for distorting perception and time, according to NBC News.
Forest Rangers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, along with local firefighters, located the hikers and guided them safely out of the wilderness. At the trailhead, Shandaken Ambulance personnel evaluated the group before rangers gave them a ride back to their rental property.
A photo from the scene shows a man in a white hoodie being supported by two rescuers.
“This level of dedication, at the start of a busy Labor Day weekend, is representative of the commitment shared by our Forest Ranger members,” said James McCartney, president of the Police Benevolent Association of New York State, in a statement shared with People.
The incident didn’t end there — one hiker had lost their car keys during the ordeal. Rangers returned the next day and found the keys in a sling bag hidden beneath a log and tall ferns.
