FBI Agents Will Patrol DC Streets Amid Trump Crackdown

The FBI is set to deploy 120 agents to Washington, DC, amid a renewed push by former President Donald Trump for a federal crackdown on crime and homelessness in the capital, according to The Washington Post. The move has sparked tensions between local and federal authorities, as city leaders question the necessity and motives behind the operation.

Sources say the agents will begin overnight patrols across DC, focusing on violent crime and carjackings. The deployment comes despite recent data showing a significant drop in crime: violent crime is down 26%, and homicides have fallen 12% compared to last year, according to city officials.

The agents, pulled from units specializing in counterintelligence and public corruption, are not typically trained for street-level enforcement. Many are expected to support traffic stops and joint operations with local police in roles outside their usual scope. The reassignments have reportedly led to internal frustration and declining morale within the bureau, especially as the effort moves forward without direct input from DC’s police leadership.

Trump has used social media to portray the city as unsafe and unclean, vowing to “clear out” the homeless population and promising a return to law and order. “There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’ We want our Capital BACK,” he posted, signaling a hardline approach.

Mayor Muriel Bowser and other local officials have pushed back, criticizing the federal intervention as unnecessary and politically motivated. Advocates for the homeless have also condemned the plan, arguing that federal resources would be better spent on housing and support services rather than ramped-up policing.

The DC deployment follows reports from The New York Times that around 900 FBI agents nationwide have recently been reassigned to immigration enforcement duties, raising further concerns about the agency’s shifting priorities.

Trump is expected to outline more details of his plan at a news conference on Monday.
