Help! I Just Found Out My Husband Racked Up 0,000 of Credit Card Debt Because He Was “Depressed.”

Dear Prudence,

I’ve been married for 23 years and we have a 10-year-old. Our relationship has not been what I hoped for. It’s been so hard! We did years of couples counseling before we had a child. Since I became pregnant, we do not have any physical intimacy, which stems from him. I just found out that my spouse racked up $100,000 of credit card debt because he “was depressed.” Thankfully none in my name. We separated our finances immediately. I’m so mad. We’ve had separate bedrooms for five years. We don’t argue in front of our child and work hard to co-parent peacefully. But I resent him and have no respect for him. I’m staying for our child.

But I wonder if we divorced and stayed in the same house for the child, maybe it would help me get some peace. I don’t plan on trying to date but might be open to it down the road. I worry about the impact on our child when we go our separate ways when the child is out of high school. I’m so overwhelmed with the logistics of divorcing and selling a home, etc. Maybe we can do it over a few years. I worry I’ll end up alone, old, and unloved. I’m torn and tired. Do you have any thoughts or even success stories to share?
