My Dad Just Said Something Absolutely Mortifying About My Body
by Dan Kois
A couple of months ago, I went to a volunteer event, and I got a free T-shirt afterward. It’s comfy and oversized, and I usually wear it to sleep or when I’m just lounging around at home—never when I go out. The only problem is that it’s a little see-through, but I obviously wear a bra underneath, so I didn’t think much of it. The other day, though, I had only a white bra, not an ideal color to wear under a thin white shirt. Then my dad commented …
… that I shouldn’t wear that shirt because it was see-through. I might be overthinking this, but I felt gross after that. I’ve spent years hiding “embarrassing” parts of me from him, like covering up my bras when doing laundry or hiding my sanitary pads and the wrappers in the bathroom. And the one time I slip up, he notices. I may be making a big deal out of this, but I can’t help but feel as if I did something improper or indecent. Should I stop wearing the T-shirt if it makes my dad uncomfortable?
