Dear Mr. Fixit:

what the heck is this behind the attic kneewall??

We have a finished attic with kneewall spaces that are not accessible. I’ve been wondering what’s going on behind them, and wanted to check because we are doing some work in the general attic space. (Redoing the flooring and some other projects).

Drilled a hole and took a boroscope through it and caught the following images. I thought maybe it was mold (the attic in general could use better temp control which is part of our ongoing projects) so had a mold company run an air test in the space. Came back super clear (1 ascospore detected).

So now I’m thinking…some kind of pest nests?? They look like clumps of dirt, but the one almost looks like the clump of dirt “opened” if anyone else sees that in the 3rd pic. The only bugs we’ve ever seen in the attic are Asian Lady Beetles, and that’s rare and maybe like 1 or 2 per year when weather gets cold. We rarely see spiders or other creepy crawlers anywhere in the house other than some in our basement, but not the attic. We’ve been in the house a few years now, so I wonder if maybe the previous owners had a problem and maybe these are old and left behind from some kind of pest?

It’s enough clumps that’s it’s gotta be something like bugs, or maybe it is mold that just wasn’t picked up in the test (though it’s a very small space so I would think the test would’ve caught it with that amount of mold).

Thoughts anyone???
