I(20f) live in a Southeast Asian country. Here, it is a societal expectation that a man needs a woman’s parents to approve before he marries her. My parents hate my boyfriend because he’s a Christian and they said they will never give us permission to get married. They called him an ‘Americanized moron’.
Hearing them say this upset me. I’m not planning to get married anytime soon but ended up having an argument with them anyways that led to me saying that I don’t need their permission to get married if I want to marry him one day. They said I do because of culture and I told them I don’t care about our culture. That our culture means nothing to me. It seemed to shock them a lot and I have moved out. They messaged me calling me a disappointment for what I said. Am I the asshole?
