The story behind this recipe is a short one. In the late 1950s, my dad went to a cocktail party in Philadelphia and was offered a Triscuit cracker topped with crunchy peanut butter and then prepared horseradish. It was an hors d’oeuvre he had never seen or heard of before and hasn’t seen out in the world since. He was so intrigued by the flavor that it stuck with him until he was old enough to host parties himself. Since then, if my dad is having people over, you are likely to see a tray of these included in the mix. Although they’re often met with skepticism for the uninitiated, you really can’t knock it until you try one.
How to Make Peanut Butter Horseradish Crackers
Peanut butter horseradish crackers couldn’t be simpler to make. Spread about 1 tablespoon of crunchy peanut butter on a Triscuit cracker and top with a dollop or so of prepared horseradish, to taste.
If You’re Making Peanut Horseradish Crackers, a Few Tips
- Taste the horseradish first. Prepared horseradishes can range in heat level. Make sure to taste your jar first and use the amount that aligns with your heat preference.
- Swap in your favorite cracker. Although my dad insists on Triscuits, I think this combo would be just as welcome on a buttery cracker, a hearty wheat cracker, or whatever your favorite cracker may be. You just don’t want a cracker with extra flavors that may compete or clash with this already unique combination.
- Use smooth peanut butter. Don’t like crunchy peanut butter? Go for smooth instead!
