The United States might be considered the greatest military power in the modern world, but there are several countries giving the Americans a run for their money in 2026, if the revelations of a recent report are to be believed.
While the United States has a powerful military that can project its power across the world, it has also come under fire in recent years for losing several wars, including the ongoing war with Iran that is reportedly at a standstill.
The United States will not be the greatest military power in the world forever, and it may soon be surpassed by some of the other emerging military superpowers, such as China, which fields more active personnel than the US.
America no longer has the largest military force across several key metrics, according to the 2026 Global Firepower Report. On October 23rd, Visual Capitalist used the report to outline where the world’s top militaries stand.
When it comes to the largest active force, China is by far the biggest military power with 2,035,000 active personnel, followed by India with 1,431,000 and the United States in a close third place with 1,333,030 active personnel.
Behind the United States, sharing fourth place, are Russia and North Korea, which field an active personnel force of 1,320,000 each. Ukraine is next at 900,000. Pakistan and Iran follow at a more subdued 660,000 and 610,000.
However, the size of a military’s active personnel force isn’t the only deciding factor for what makes a military force formidable. It is also important to look at ground, sea, and air power, and China comes out ahead once again by many measures.
When it comes to ground power, there is nothing mightier than the tank, and China is the country with the most tanks at 5,870, followed by Russia at 5,630, North Korea at 4,895, and then the United States in fourth at 4,666.
Tank stocks fall off precipitously after the fourth spot, with India in fifth place for the most tanks in its arsenal at 3,913, followed by Egypt with 3,620, Pakistan with 2,677, and Iran with 2,675. However, tanks aren’t the be-all and end-all in ground warfare anymore.
The war in Ukraine has revealed that cheaper first-person view drones can easily take out pricey tanks, which means that these massive mechanical weapons of war may not be as dominant on the battlefield as they once were.
Sea power has also been affected by cheap drones, but maintaining a naval force is still important for power projection, and here it is really only the United States that can field that ability, even if it doesn’t have the world’s biggest navy anymore.
China has 841 naval assets, giving Beijing the world’s biggest navy. Russia surprisingly also has a larger navy than the United States, with 747 ships. America sat in third place at 465 naval assets. However, Visual Capitalist noted that many of the ships in China and Russia’s navies are patrol vessels, while America has many more larger ships.
When looking at tonnage, the United States took the lead on naval power. The Global Firepower tonnage ranking showed that American naval assets had about 2.6 times the total tonnage displacement of China, which is a very important metric.
No other power can project power like the United States with its aircraft carrier groups, which by itself currently gives Washington the most powerful military in the world, even if that could change in the future if China shifts toward a more global naval force.
The United States is also the undisputed leader in air power with 13,032 military aircraft. This has allowed Washington to project power throughout the world, especially because of America’s fleet of refueling tankers and airbases found on nearly every continent.
Visual Capitalist noted that the number of American military aircraft in the arsenal of the United States military reflected the demands of its global operations, which the graphics outlet reported required America to field more combat jets than other rival nations.
“America’s global military presence depends on moving troops and supplies across oceans and keeping combat aircraft flying far from their bases. Those operations require large fleets of transport planes and refueling tankers alongside fighter jets,” Niccolo Conte of Visual Capitalist explained.
Russia was second on the list of countries with the most military aircraft, but it had a lot fewer than the United States, at just 4,237. China sat in third place at 3,529, followed by India at 2,183, South Korea at 1,540, Japan at 1,429, and Pakistan at 1,397.
“The U.S. has 1,791 compared with China’s 1,443, a lead of roughly 24%,” Conte explained. “This highlights how much of America’s overall aircraft advantage comes from other types of military aircraft.” When combined with the other categories, it’s easy to see why the United States is currently the world’s greatest military power.
