Fears of a third world war have resurfaced after North Korea deployed artillery near its heavily fortified border with South Korea, with one weapon carrying a chilling warning directed at the United States.

North and South Korea have remained bitter enemies since the Korean War ended in 1953, despite signing an armistice in 1953 that ended active fighting without establishing a formal peace treaty.

Despite South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung’s efforts to revive peace talks and formally end the Korean War, tensions between Pyongyang (North Korea’s capital) and Seoul escalated in September when two South Korean soldiers were seriously injured in a landmine explosion inside the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a 160-mile buffer separating the two countries.

A joint investigation by South Korea and the U.S.-led United Nations Command determined that a North Korean anti-personnel mine caused the explosion, violating the armistice.

North Korea disputed the findings, sending letters to the United Nations Security Council accusing Seoul of fabricating the incident.

‘Not a threat, but a clear warning’

The escalating tensions have also fueled speculation about North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, after false reports circulated claiming he had died from a brain haemorrhage, drawing attention to his powerful sister, Kim Yo Jong.

As rumors about her brother’s health spread, Kim Yo Jong issued a chilling warning to South Korea following reports that its military had fired warning shots near the border.

According to CBS News, she threatened Seoul of “the most horrible and distressing situation” if North Korean personnel were harmed, while accusing the country of provoking a confrontation.

“This is not a threat, but a clear warning,” she added.

‘Destroy the US imperialist aggressors’

With diplomatic relations deteriorating and military warnings growing increasingly hostile, North Korea has now delivered another unsettling message, this time through a conspicuous display of artillery near the heavily fortified border.

According to Sky News, three North Korean self-propelled howitzers were spotted with their barrels facing south, while soldiers carried out fencing work in the DMZ nearby.

The unusual placement caught the attention of Lim Eul-Chul, a professor at Kyungnam University in Seoul, who suggested the weapons were deliberately positioned to intimidate South Korea.

“It is highly unusual (for North Korea) to expose its self-propelled artillery so conspicuously,” he said.

“By deliberately displaying it, North Korea is signalling through action, not words, that it intends to enforce its border policy through force rather than dialogue or negotiation,” Lim added.

South Korean military officials confirmed they were monitoring the artillery, which appeared to consist of older weapons rather than the newer systems Pyongyang has previously threatened to deploy.

But, according to the Telegraph, the most chilling detail was written in Korean across the front of each artillery truck, directly beneath the guns: “Destroy the US imperialist aggressors, the sworn enemies of the Korean people!”
