Kidnapping suspect arrested after Tinder date ‘gone wrong’
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A Goose Creek man was arrested Sunday after kidnapping his Tinder date and leading police on a pursuit in Charleston, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
On Sunday, around 2:00 a.m., deputies responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting that her Tinder date was refusing to let her leave the vehicle.
After receiving further information, deputies located the vehicle near Leopold Street in Charleston.
Deputies attempted to make contact with Michael James Voorhees, 26, of Goose Creek, who was driving with the victim inside the vehicle, according to CCSO.
Voorhees allowed the victim to exit the vehicle in a neighborhood before he sped toward Maybank Highway, CCSO says.
A pursuit followed, leading deputies to deploy stop sticks multiple times.
The pursuit ended near the Ashley River Memorial Bridge, when the suspect’s vehicle and a CCSO cruiser collided, CCSO says.
Voorhees was transported to MUSC for jail clearance. No further injuries were reported, according to CCSO.
Voorhees is charged with kidnapping; possession, sale, or disposal of a stolen vehicle valued at more than $10,000; hit-and-run with property damage; assault on a police officer while resisting arrest; and failure to stop for blue lights.
The vehicle Voorhees drove during the pursuit was later confirmed to be the victim’s vehicle, resulting in charges of possession and disposal of a stolen vehicle.
