SURF CITY, N.J. – Residents along the Jersey Shore are used to seeing flooded streets after a major storm. Parked cars sitting in water? Sure. Floating trash cans? Happens all the time.

A shark swimming down the middle of a neighborhood road?

That’s a new one.

A New Jersey resident captured video of a shark gliding through floodwaters that had swallowed parts of a residential street during a powerful nor’easter that battered the East Coast. The footage showed the animal’s dorsal fin slicing through the murky water as it navigated what normally serves as a perfectly ordinary neighborhood roadway. [upi.com]

According to reports, the shark was spotted in Surf City on Long Beach Island after storm-driven flooding transformed streets into temporary canals. Witnesses watched as the fish appeared completely unfazed by its unusual surroundings, swimming past driveways and homes as though it had taken a wrong turn somewhere offshore. [upi.com]

Experts who reviewed the footage identified the visitor as a smooth dogfish shark, a species commonly found in coastal waters. While not considered dangerous to people, seeing one cruising through a suburban neighborhood is not exactly an everyday occurrence. [upi.com]

The shark eventually disappeared from view after swimming through the flooded area, leaving behind a video that quickly attracted attention online.

The incident serves as a reminder of just how strange nature can become when severe weather collides with coastal communities. One moment you’re checking storm damage. The next, you’re looking out the window and wondering why a shark is using your street as a shortcut.

For longtime residents, it may be the first time they’ve ever had to add “watch for sharks” to the neighborhood flood advisory.

And somewhere in New Jersey, a shark now has a story about the time it accidentally visited the suburbs.
