For most people, selling a house means handing over the keys and moving on.
But one homeowner says the man who sold her family their dream home simply couldn’t let go.
According to a viral TikTok video, the previous owner allegedly kept a secret key to the property and used it to sneak back inside after the sale had already closed, kicking off months of what the new owner describes as bizarre and unsettling behavior.
“I guess he missed the house,” homeowner Jaci Smith told viewers.
‘Sorry, I Just Came Over and Walked Around’
Smith said the discovery came after the family had already moved into the property.
According to her account, the former owner used an extra key to enter the home through a side door while nobody was there. The next day, she says, he returned with a confession.
“He came over and dropped off the key and said, ‘Sorry, I found an extra one. I came over last night and just walked around,'” Smith recalled.
For many homeowners, the idea of a previous owner wandering through their house in the middle of the night would sound less like nostalgia and more like a horror movie.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of one of the oldest pieces of home-buying advice: change the locks immediately. Even when sellers return every key they acknowledge having, there’s no way to know how many copies may exist in the hands of former neighbors, relatives, contractors, babysitters or friends.
The Neighborhood Didn’t Want to Let Go, Either
If the former owner’s behavior wasn’t strange enough, Smith says some of the neighbors also appeared to have trouble accepting the change.
According to Smith, several nearby residents had been close friends with the previous owner and were unhappy when the new family began renovating the property.
The biggest controversy? Landscaping.
Smith joked that the home’s front yard had little charm when they purchased it, describing it as mostly rocks, cacti and assorted desert plants. When neighbors asked whether they could rescue some of the plants before renovations began, the family agreed.
What happened next left her stunned.
According to Smith, the neighbors effectively turned her yard into a community giveaway site.
She says they posted her address online, invited residents to come by and announced that plants could be claimed directly from the property.
In other words, strangers suddenly had a reason to show up at a house the family had only recently purchased.
“We want them to go to a good home,” Smith remembers telling the neighbors.
What she didn’t expect, she says, was for them to advertise her address on Facebook and turn the front yard into an impromptu plant-picking event.
What Should Homeowners Do?
Property experts generally recommend rekeying or replacing all exterior locks immediately after taking possession of a home. Homeowners should also preserve any security footage, document unwanted visits and clearly inform former owners that they no longer have permission to enter the property.
If unauthorized visits continue, homeowners may have grounds to contact law enforcement, as entering property without permission can constitute trespassing under state law.
As for Smith’s story, what should have been a routine move-in turned into something far stranger: a former owner allegedly sneaking back into “his” old home, possessive neighbors unwilling to embrace change and a family that learned the hard way why changing the locks should be one of the first items checked off the moving checklist.
