Police were dispatched to Kamala Harris’ $8.15 million Malibu beach property on Friday after her security team caught a trespasser on the property, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and a Harris spokesperson said.
The incident unfolded on Friday evening. Neither Harris nor her husband, Doug Emhoff, was at the property at the time, Eduardo Negrón, a spokesperson for Harris, confirmed.
He released a statement about the situation, which has sparked security concerns for the former 2024 presidential candidate amid an era of heightened political violence in the country ahead of the November midterms.
“Last night, security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff’s property before the individual reached the home,” Negrón said in a statement. “They are grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded swiftly.”
Officers with the LAPD arrived at her residence around 10:30 p.m. Friday and got in touch with Harris’ private security after receiving a suspicious-person call, according to LAPD spokesperson Julia Ann Tafoya, who confirmed the person left the property voluntarily without incident once confronted by law enforcement. No arrest or citation was made.
“The individual who was outside of the property upon our arrival was warned and advised by deputies to leave the premises and left voluntarily without incident,” Tafoya said, adding that officers made a trespassing report and plan to continue patrolling the area.
Lt. Jason Duron of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station told The California Post, “We’re gonna keep an eye on the location. I’m directing my deputies to keep an eye on it.”
Tafoya also confirmed that the suspect, reportedly a woman, arrived at the property after being dropped off by an Uber.
The suspect reportedly returned after security initially turned her away, prompting them to call the police about a potential intruder, according to The Post. It remains unclear what the suspect’s intentions were with entering the property.
President Donald Trump rescinded Harris’ access to Secret Service protection last August, before her mandated six-month period expired. She had received an additional year secured by former President Joe Biden after her four-year White House term expired. However, by this time, federal laws would have kicked in that made her ineligible for such security services.
While the incident occurred on the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, there are currently no reports suggesting that the situation is tied to that fact. Notably, an arsonist set Jewish Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s residence ablaze last spring during Passover. The suspect, identified as Cody Balmer, 38, entered pleas to terrorism, arson, aggravated arson, burglary, and aggravated assault last fall in connection with the incident.
