Severe flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak has led to hundreds of snakes escaping from a farm in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, prompting warnings from local officials and a coordinated effort to recapture the animals.
The region has endured days of heavy rain, with authorities issuing the highest flood alert on Monday. By Tuesday, water levels had surged across 62 rivers, and the Qingshui River recorded its largest flood since monitoring began. The rising waters overwhelmed the Liulan and Yunbiao reservoirs, causing widespread damage — including the destruction of a snake farm in Dengwei Village, Hengzhou.
Local officials estimate that between 800 and 900 snakes were swept away when floodwaters tore through the facility. Wu Zhi, head of the village committee, said one resident was bitten and taken to hospital for emergency treatment. He added that most of the escaped snakes were non‑venomous.
Many of the snakes were carried off by fast‑moving floodwaters, but a smaller number remain in the area, clinging to floating debris or lingering in stagnant pools. Snakes captured so far have largely been non‑venomous water snakes.
The farm raises three species — cobras, king rat snakes, and water snakes — for traditional medicine, meat, and anti‑venom production. Of these, only the cobras pose a venomous threat.
Residents have shared videos and photos online showing snakes swimming through flooded streets and fields, urging neighbors to stay alert. In response, local authorities assembled a team equipped with fishing tools and stun guns to locate and capture the animals.
Officials have advised residents not to attempt catching snakes themselves. Anyone who spots one is asked to report it to the village committee so trained personnel can respond safely.
The flooding has affected Nanning and surrounding villages, while Typhoon Maysak has also brought thunderstorms and rare tornadoes to areas hundreds of kilometers away, adding to the region’s challenges as recovery efforts continue.
