Quick-Thinking Controller Keeps Two American Jets With Identical Call Signs Safely Apart

An alert air traffic controller prevented a potentially dangerous mix-up near Phoenix after two American Airlines jets found themselves flying toward one another while using the same flight number and radio frequency.

Both aircraft were operating as American Airlines Flight 2482 shortly after midnight Friday. One was descending toward Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport after arriving from Chicago, while the other had recently departed Phoenix for the return trip to Chicago.

The two flights would not ordinarily have been in the air simultaneously. Flight 2482 normally operates as a round trip, with the same aircraft flying from Chicago to Phoenix and then returning to Chicago.

Weather delayed the inbound flight from Chicago, however, leaving passengers in Phoenix waiting for the return trip. American Airlines substituted a different aircraft so those passengers could depart on schedule—but the second plane was sent out using the same flight number as the delayed aircraft still approaching Phoenix.

That placed two separate jets in the same airspace, on the same radio frequency and responding to the identical call sign: “American 2482.”

The controller quickly recognized the problem and began distinguishing the aircraft as “American 2482 on the arrival” and “American 2482 on the departure.”

That wording was crucial. A routine instruction directed simply to “American 2482” could have been acknowledged by either crew—or both. If both pilots had responded to the same altitude instruction while their flight paths were converging, the situation could have become dangerous.

The controller kept the arriving jet above the departing aircraft and instructed the outbound plane not to climb beyond a specified altitude. He also confirmed that both flight crews could see the other aircraft while they were still miles apart.

Flight-tracking data reportedly showed the jets passing with approximately three miles of horizontal separation and 2,000 feet of vertical separation. The Federal Aviation Administration said required separation was maintained throughout the encounter.

Once the aircraft had safely passed one another, one of the pilots praised the controller’s work.

“I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years,” the controller responded in audio published by ATC.com. “I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much merge with the same call sign. That’s pretty incredible.”

“It could have been disastrous, but I’m glad it all worked out,” he later added.

Both flights continued safely and without further incident.

Aviation safety expert Steve Arroyo told the Associated Press that the duplicate call signs were likely overlooked during the airline’s dispatch process when flight plans for the two aircraft were approved.

“You can drop the ball and that shouldn’t happen, but it’s nice to see that the system is resilient and we have all the safeguards,” Arroyo said.

American Airlines said it is reviewing how two aircraft were permitted to operate in the same area under the same call sign.

“The diligence and professionalism of air traffic controllers and our pilots ensured required separation was always maintained, and the issue was identified and addressed,” the airline said. “Both flights continued safely and without incident.”

The FAA has also opened an investigation.

No collision occurred, no emergency was declared and the required safety distance between the jets was never violated. Still, the episode demonstrated why unique and unmistakable aircraft identification is so important—and how quickly an experienced controller may have to improvise when the system produces something no one in the control room expected to see.
