Brazilian influencer Kauana Bilhar died after falling from the 27th floor of a high-rise building in Dubai on July 7, setting off a police investigation—and, naturally, an even faster investigation by thousands of strangers armed with absolutely no evidence.
Bilhar had lived in the United Arab Emirates for about two years and had attracted more than 20,000 Instagram followers with posts about her travels and life abroad. Her uncle said she fell from the balcony of her room, but authorities have not publicly determined whether her death was an accident, suicide, homicide or something else.
In other words, nobody outside the investigation knows what happened.
That minor inconvenience did not stop social-media users from immediately inventing motives, accusing people and passing judgment on a dead woman they had never met. Because apparently reading three paragraphs on a gossip site now qualifies a person to solve an international death investigation.
Bilhar’s mother, Darla, traveled to Dubai to follow the investigation and make arrangements to bring her daughter’s body home. While experiencing what she called the worst moment of her life, she also found herself forced to defend her daughter from rumors, insults and made-up stories circulating online.
“My daughter deserves respect,” she said in a video posted after the death, asking journalists and social-media users to show some responsibility and empathy. She reminded critics that it is remarkably easy to judge when the dead woman is somebody else’s daughter.
Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its embassy was monitoring the case and remained available to assist the family.
Bilhar’s final Instagram posts reportedly included photographs of her life in Dubai and the British Shorthair cat she had recently adopted. Days later, her family was preparing to bring her body back to Brazil.
The actual circumstances of her death remain under investigation.
But here is the painfully obvious part: falling from the 27th floor is fatal. What is not obvious—and what strangers online do not yet know—is why she fell, whether anyone else was responsible or what occurred inside that apartment before her death.
Until investigators establish those facts, the loudest online theory remains exactly that: a theory shouted by someone who was not there.
