Former President Joe Biden’s speech at the Maryland Democratic Party’s “Fight Back & Win Gala” in Hanover was interrupted when he decided to criticized what he described as “corruption” within the Trump administration.
Biden was speaking to supporters when his remarks were interrupted by boos. It was unclear whether the reaction was directed at his comments or at someone in the audience who shouted during the speech.
A person in the crowd appeared to yell “Genocide Joe,” a slogan used by critics of Biden’s handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict. The outburst prompted boos from others in attendance.
During his remarks, Biden criticized President Donald Trump, accusing his administration of the “deliberate destruction of NATO” and mocking plans to renovate the White House with a new ballroom, calling the project a “vanity project.”
He closed his roughly 10-minute speech with a message of optimism, arguing that the country can overcome its current challenges.
“Have you noticed that Americans are saying the economy under the Biden administration is a hell of a lot better than under Trump?” Biden told the audience.
He continued by criticizing Trump’s building projects, saying: “It’s not just his vanity projects—tearing down the East Wing of the White House to make room for his ballroom. Putting his name on the Kennedy Center. Building an arch in his own honor. Even hiring his own pool guy to fix the reflecting pool. Whoa—what a loser.”
Biden also said it was “simply stunning to me” that Trump had made “billions of dollars” after returning to the White House.
“He has no shame, and frankly it’s embarrassing for the country. But Trump? Trump couldn’t care less,” he said.
The 83-year-old former president has made relatively few public appearances since leaving office. His last major speech before a live audience was in Chicago during the dedication of former President Barack Obama’s presidential library.
Toward the end of his presidency, Biden faced criticism over his age during his bid for a second term, with some pointing to his slower speech and movements. During Saturday’s appearance, he relied on a teleprompter for much of his speech.
Biden also experienced a brief coughing spell near the beginning of his remarks but quickly recovered and continued speaking. Despite the interruption, he received a standing ovation from the idiots in the audience.
