Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico admitted that he “hates Christianity,” and it shows. The seminary student who infamously proclaimed that “God is nonbinary” has shown he’s out to create his own woke religion that bears no resemblance to biblical Christianity.

“I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity,” Talarico said in a 2021 interview with a so-called “TransQueer activist theologian” that resurfaced this week.

Why would Talarico hate Christianity? The answer is very simple: The Bible calls the LGBT lifestyles that he promotes “sin” and “abomination” (Leviticus 20:13, Deuteronomy 22:5). It calls for traditional gender roles (Ephesians 5:22-33). It affirms that there are only two genders (Matthew 19:4). It outright condemns socialism (Proverbs 1:14-15). It affirms the value of unborn children (Exodus 21:22-25).

And most importantly, it declares that “there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved,” apart from the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).

The Democratic Party platform is antithetical to biblical Christianity. But to get elected for a statewide office in Texas, one must at least pretend to be a Christian. Hence, the Talarico candidacy was born — only a Christianity-hating “Christian” could fit the role.

In the gospel according to Talarico, salvation from hell has nothing to do with the Lord Jesus Christ — in fact, he says all religions have the “same truth.” Rather, he claims salvation is earned by feeding the hungry, helping the sick, welcoming strangers, and visiting prisoners. In his gospel, adherence to Biblical righteousness constitutes “harassment,” while engaging in abominable behavior is celebrated. One might recall that Isaiah 5:20 says, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil.”

This false gospel is, by far, the most dangerous idea Talarico teaches. It’s one thing to ruin our country, but his greater sin is damning people to hell. The Bible warns against people attempting to “establish their own righteousness” rather than “submitt[ing] themselves unto the righteousness of God” (Romans 10:3). The Scriptures teach that if salvation could come through doing good works like feeding the hungry or helping the sick, then “Christ is dead in vain” (Galatians 2:21). And according to the Bible, false gospels lead directly to hell (Galatians 1:8-9).

The true gospel is not politically correct — it is no wonder that Talarico “hates” it. The Bible reveals the true nature of man. Simply put, every man is a sinner (Romans 3:10, 23) and all sinners are condemned to hell (Revelation 21:8, 27). You cannot earn salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9) — in fact, the Bible says “every man at his best state is altogether vanity” (Psalm 39:5) and “all our righteousness are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). But Jesus, God in the flesh, came down from heaven to die a torturous death, shed His blood to pay for our sins, and rose again on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

It is only by putting your full trust in what Jesus did on the cross (Romans 3:25) — not your own righteousness — and calling on Him for salvation (Romans 10:10), that a man can be saved from his sins, according to the Bible.

The biblical gospel, which is incompatible with Talarico’s woke religion, says you are not “good enough” — only Jesus Christ is — and “your truth” is meaningless because Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). If that’s not popular among hippie liberal Democrats, so be it. But don’t call whatever Talarico preaches “Christianity.”

Christians in Texas should know better than to vote for Talarico. Rather, they should pray that the Democrat repents of his false gospel, puts his trust in Christ alone, and asks the Lord to save him — because as long as there is air in Talarico’s lungs, there is still hope.

You know who else hated Christianity? Saul of Tarsus, the first-century Pharisee who had Christians tortured and killed for professing Jesus. And what became of Saul? He went on to become the greatest Christian missionary and evangelist in history, the Apostle Paul, who wrote half the books of the New Testament. That’s the transformative power of the true gospel, which I hope Talarico someday accepts.
