RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — Rex Heuermann, the man convicted in the notorious Gilgo Beach serial killings, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The 62-year-old was convicted of murdering eight women whose remains were discovered along Long Island’s South Shore between 2010 and 2011. His sentencing comes nearly two years after his arrest in July 2023, bringing a major chapter of one of the nation’s most infamous unsolved serial murder cases to a close.
The investigation began in 2010 following the disappearance of 23-year-old Shannon Gilbert. During the search for Gilbert, authorities uncovered the remains of multiple women along Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County. Among the victims were Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Robinson, and Karen Vergata.
Many of the victims’ remains were found wrapped in burlap and buried within close proximity to one another. Additional remains were discovered the following year at various locations across Long Island. Several victims had worked as sex workers and advertised services on Craigslist.
For more than a decade, the case remained unsolved until investigators identified Heuermann, a Massapequa Park architect, as a suspect in 2022.
A key lead came from a witness connected to victim Amber Costello, who reported that a man named Rex had visited their Babylon home shortly before Costello disappeared. The witness also recalled seeing a green Chevrolet Avalanche parked outside the residence. Investigators later linked a similar vehicle to Heuermann.
The Gilgo Beach Task Force spent more than a year tracking Heuermann, analyzing cell phone records, burner phone activity, and internet searches. Authorities said he conducted more than 200 online searches related to the Gilgo investigation.
A major breakthrough occurred when investigators recovered a discarded pizza box near Heuermann’s Manhattan office. DNA collected from the box allegedly matched evidence found on burlap used to wrap one of the victims, Megan Waterman.
Heuermann was arrested as he left work in Manhattan in July 2023.
During Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, family members of the victims delivered emotional impact statements describing years of grief, trauma, and unanswered questions.
Melissa Barthelemy’s sister, Amanda Funderburg, recalled receiving disturbing phone calls from the killer after her sister’s disappearance and told the court that the experience robbed her of her childhood.
Nicolette Brainard-Barnes, whose mother Maureen was killed when she was just seven years old, spoke about growing up with PTSD and depression. Addressing Heuermann directly, she said she did not forgive him and believed he should spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Other relatives shared painful memories of loved ones whose lives were cut short, emphasizing the lasting impact of the murders on their families.
Before sentencing, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney urged the court to impose the maximum punishment, arguing that Heuermann’s actions warranted no leniency.
When asked by the judge whether he was sorry for killing the women, Heuermann responded, “Yes, I am.”
The judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole. The decision was met with applause from many family members in the courtroom, some of whom said the sentence finally brought a measure of justice after years of suffering.
Heuermann has remained in custody in Riverhead since his arrest. Officials have not yet announced where he will serve the remainder of his sentence. His ex-wife and two adult children did not attend the sentencing, saying through their attorney that they chose to stay away out of respect for the victims’ families.
