Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) said she is troubled by what she describes as a lack of respect directed toward her, citing both her role as a member of Congress and her identity as a Black woman in America.

Speaking during an appearance on the talk show Sherri, Crockett emphasized that while she holds elected office, her lived experience shapes how she views public criticism.

“I’m a Black woman in America,” she said. “Some people say, ‘But you’re a congresswoman.’ I’m a Black woman first.”

She went on to describe what she sees as a broader pattern of disrespect toward Black women, questioning why she continues to face such treatment despite her position as one of the 535 members of Congress. Crockett noted that she considers that role to carry significant influence and responsibility.

“At the same time, I’m one of the most powerful people in this country,” she said. “And for some reason, people think we are on the same level, but you don’t disrespect me.”

Crockett has drawn attention in the past for a number of controversial remarks and public disputes. Critics have pointed to her sharp rhetoric toward political opponents, including past comments about President Trump and his supporters.

She has also faced backlash over remarks made about Texas Governor Greg Abbott during a speech at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in 2025. In that instance, she referred to him using a nickname that some interpreted as mocking his disability. Crockett later said her comments were aimed at his policies, particularly his handling of migrant transportation, rather than his physical condition.

In another incident, Crockett was accused of grabbing a journalist’s phone and scratching his hand during an exchange in which she declined to answer a question.

Crockett has also spoken frequently on issues related to immigration and the economy. In a past interview, she argued that immigration plays a role in stabilizing costs for everyday goods, including groceries and housing.

“If you ask people whether they are okay with grocery prices or housing costs, and then connect that to the role immigrants play in contributing to the economy, perspectives may begin to shift,” she said.

She has also made comments suggesting that immigrant labor remains important to the U.S. economy, while drawing criticism for how she framed those remarks.

At the same time, Crockett has been outspoken in her criticism of President Trump and his administration, at times using strong language to describe their policies. Her statements have drawn both support from allies and criticism from opponents, contributing to her profile as a polarizing figure in national politics.
