A fatal shooting at a Costco store in Strongsville, Ohio, has led to a murder charge against a 22-year-old man who claims he acted in self-defense.

Police say Christian M. Bryant was taken into custody following the incident and is now charged with one count of murder in the death of 61-year-old Randolph E. Corrigan, a Cleveland resident who worked at the store.

Officers were called to the Costco on Royalton Road at about 5:43 p.m. Saturday after reports of gunfire. The location sits roughly 15 miles southwest of Cleveland. When authorities arrived, they found Corrigan suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, abdomen, and arm. Witnesses at the scene had already begun trying to help by applying pressure to his injuries before first responders stepped in. He was transported to MetroHealth for treatment but later died.

Investigators said Corrigan was initially conscious and able to respond to questions, though his condition quickly worsened before he was pronounced dead.

Early statements from police described the situation as a confrontation between two individuals. The following day, officials asked additional witnesses to come forward as they continued gathering information.

By Monday, Bryant had been formally identified as the suspect. Authorities indicated the case will be presented to a grand jury, with the possibility of further charges.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident began when Corrigan confronted Bryant near the store entrance after noticing he was carrying a firearm and attempted to stop him from going inside. Witnesses reported seeing what appeared to be a drum magazine extending from Bryant’s pocket.

During the encounter, investigators say Bryant pulled out a black semiautomatic handgun. Corrigan then produced a pocket knife. Police allege Bryant fired one shot that caused Corrigan to fall, then paused briefly before firing multiple additional rounds in rapid succession. In total, investigators recovered 13 spent .40-caliber shell casings from the scene. Authorities also seized a Springfield XD-40 handgun equipped with a drum magazine loaded with 37 rounds, along with one round in the chamber.

While being arrested, Bryant repeatedly told officers that a man had approached him with a knife and that he acted to protect himself. He attempted to make a similar statement during a court appearance before his attorney interrupted.

Police said Bryant, who works as a truck driver and was passing through Ohio, remained at the scene and was arrested without resistance. A detective noted in court that Bryant has a prior criminal record but is not currently under probation or parole.

Bryant appeared in Berea Municipal Court on Monday for his arraignment. A judge set bond at $5 million, and the case has been forwarded to a grand jury for further proceedings.
