A 25-year-old woman from Peoria, Illinois is recovering after a severe medical emergency led to a traumatic injury involving her family’s dog.
Karma Davis suffered an epileptic seizure on March 2 that caused her to lose consciousness while at home. During that time, her rescue pit bull, Fayzo, attacked her, leaving her with extensive facial injuries, according to statements she shared on a GoFundMe page along with graphic images.
Davis explained that she was unaware of what had happened until she regained awareness. Still confused and unable to fully understand her condition, she reached out to her fiancé, Trenton Davis, by message while he was at work. He urged her to start a video call, during which both of them realized the seriousness of the situation.
During that call, Davis described panicking as she saw the extent of her injuries for the first time.
She was taken to the hospital, where she was placed in a medically induced coma for nearly three days. Medical teams have since carried out multiple reconstructive surgeries in an effort to repair the damage to her face. Her injuries included significant loss of tissue to parts of her nose, lips, cheek, and ear, with surgeons later able to reattach part of one ear.
Davis, who is a mother, continues to undergo ongoing treatment and regular visits with plastic surgeons. She is currently unable to eat normally and relies on a feeding tube for nutrition.
Following the incident, animal control took custody of the dog. Fayzo was later euthanized. Davis said the dog had been part of the family for about four years and had originally been rescued from an abusive situation. While she expressed sadness about the outcome, she said she could not feel safe bringing the animal back into her home.
She also shared that seeing photos of the dog still affects her emotionally, even as she continues focusing on her recovery and further medical care.
