Border Patrol agents on Wednesday shot and killed a man who fled a checkpoint in a stolen vehicle and opened fire on officers and passing cars during a lengthy pursuit.
Authorities identified the suspect as James Douglas McMillan, 33, of Greenfield, Wisconsin.
According to officials, McMillan was driving through a Border Patrol checkpoint east of El Paso when agents instructed him to pull over for further inspection. Instead, he accelerated away from the checkpoint, triggering a pursuit.
As he fled, McMillan allegedly fired multiple shots from his vehicle window, targeting Border Patrol agents, state troopers, and even civilian vehicles on the road. Law enforcement officers chased him for roughly 70 miles before bringing the pursuit to an end.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officials said troopers ultimately stopped the stolen vehicle using a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver. After the vehicle was disabled, McMillan remained inside and barricaded himself.

“McMillan barricaded himself in his vehicle and eventually pointed his weapon toward officers,” DPS said in a statement. “Officers then discharged their weapons.”
McMillan was fatally shot at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no law enforcement officers or civilians were injured during the incident.
According to Fox News, the situation began around 10:30 a.m. when a Border Patrol drug-detection K-9 alerted agents to McMillan’s vehicle at a checkpoint along Interstate 10 near Sierra Blanca. Agents directed him to pull over for a secondary inspection, but he fled instead.
During the pursuit, McMillan allegedly fired at responding officers from multiple agencies, including DPS troopers, the Culberson County Sheriff’s Office, the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC).
The vehicle he was driving had reportedly been stolen from Arizona, authorities said.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
