Dramatic video shows a Kuwaiti threatening a downed US F-15 pilot with a metal pipe, only realizing moments later that he is American.
The footage, widely shared on social media, captures a small group of locals shouting threats at the pilot, who remains attached to his parachute after his plane was accidentally shot down by friendly fire.
“Back up, stop!” the pilot yells as one man raises a metal pipe above his head, stepping toward him. The pilot repeatedly insists he is American, even dropping to his knees at times to signal he poses no threat.
The group eventually appears to recognize he is not Iranian, lowering the pipe and relaxing their stances. While a photo from the incident was flagged by Snopes as AI-enhanced, video-tracking experts at Storyful confirmed the grainy footage was filmed in Al Ahmadi, Kuwait, and matches a clip independently verified by Reuters.
Three F-15E Strike Eagle jets, each valued at around $31.1 million, were downed by Kuwaiti friendly fire. All six crew members ejected safely and are in stable condition.
Kuwait’s Defense Ministry confirmed it is coordinating with the US regarding the “circumstances of the incident.” US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Kuwait acknowledged the event.
“During active combat — which included attacks from Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles, and drones — U.S. Air Force fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses,” CENTCOM said.
“Kuwait has acknowledged this incident, and we are grateful for the efforts of the Kuwaiti defense forces and their support in this ongoing operation.”
Additional footage has gone viral showing another F-15 pilot smiling as she meets a group of locals.
“You’re fine? Really?” one man shouted while running toward her. “Do you need anything?” The pilot confirmed she was okay, and the man reassured her, saying, “Thank you for helping us.”
Six US service members have died in action as part of Operation Epic Fury, according to CENTCOM.
“It’s war and you have casualties in war,” President Trump said during an interview with ABC journalist Jonathan Karl on Sunday.
