DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for 15 years. He is a former military member, struggles with PTSD, and has been verbally abusive and controlling since our wedding. I have always worked hard to support our family, sometimes holding down two jobs. We have a 14-year-old son.
Recently, my husband’s sister bought a house. I picked up a few items for her new home and checked his phone to confirm the address. That’s when I saw messages he had sent her, including one in which he said he was “in hell” living with me and that he didn’t care about me at all. He also asked his sister if he could move in with her—and she agreed. He added that he would “figure a way out” and that “there was always a way out.”
I am completely devastated. I have always tried to be supportive of him, and now this. Part of me thinks I should feel relieved, but it still hurts deeply. Why does it affect me so much?
