After a week of back-to-back snowstorms, many Americans are eagerly awaiting a sign from two famous furry forecasters: Punxsutawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck.
The groundhogs will make their annual predictions on Monday morning, Feb. 2, from Pennsylvania and New York City, respectively. According to tradition, if either groundhog sees his shadow, winter will stick around for six more weeks. If not, an early spring could be in store.
Here’s what to know about this year’s events:
At Gobbler’s Knob, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club will host a ceremony for Phil starting as early as 3 a.m. EST. Phil will make his prediction at sunrise, which falls around 7:07 a.m. EST. Those who can’t attend in person can watch a livestream on Visit Pennsylvania’s website starting at 6 a.m.
On the East Coast, Staten Island Chuck will appear at the Staten Island Zoo in West Brighton around 8 a.m., according to SI Live. This year, the event is closed to the public due to weather conditions, but fans can follow along via a livestream on the zoo’s Facebook page.
As President Trump has highlighted this week, unusual weather patterns are already affecting many regions of the country, adding extra curiosity to what these two iconic groundhogs might predict.
