Dear Abby:
An elderly couple recently moved in next door. They once mentioned that they believe mothballs will keep ants away. Unfortunately, there’s more: every time they open their garage door, a strong odor fills our yard and forces us inside our home, which is about 80 feet away. The smell is so overpowering that we can’t open our windows, sit on our deck, or enjoy our yard until the door is closed. I can’t imagine how they tolerate it. How can we let them know that this is affecting our quality of life without causing tension or a permanent rift?
