An Indiana homeowner has been charged with multiple felonies following a fatal shooting involving an armed intruder who allegedly forced his way into the home while impersonating police.

The incident occurred Saturday night in Muncie, Indiana, according to a report from Fox 59. Officers with the Muncie Police Department responded to a call about a shooting and found 28-year-old Marcus Brown Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Brown was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police say the homeowner, 33-year-old Daniel Songer, fired several shots after an intruder kicked in his front door. Songer told dispatchers he used his girlfriend’s handgun and fired until the weapon malfunctioned. He immediately called 911 and reported that the intruder claimed to be a police officer and appeared to be deceased.

Officers arriving at the scene observed significant damage to the front door consistent with forced entry. Brown was found lying in the doorway, and a silver handgun was recovered on the porch. Police said Songer placed the unloaded firearm there at the direction of dispatchers before officers arrived.

Investigators reviewed video footage that reportedly shows Songer firing the gun inside the residence. Despite evidence suggesting a break-in, Songer was arrested and preliminarily charged with obstruction of justice, a Level 6 felony, and unlawful carrying of a handgun, a Level 5 felony.

Police noted that Songer admitted he used his girlfriend’s firearm because he is legally prohibited from possessing a gun due to a prior felony conviction.

Court records also state that video footage showed Songer moving a cardboard box away from a fish tank and handing it to his girlfriend, who placed it into a Dodge Ram truck parked outside the residence. Officers later recovered the box at another location and found vacuum-sealed packages containing a plant-like substance believed to be marijuana.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. Songer was being held at the Delaware County Jail as of Sunday, with bond set at $10,000.
