Bill Maher may still identify as a liberal, but he’s clearly losing patience with people on his own side who seem unable to move past their obsession with President Donald Trump.

On a recent episode of his Club Random podcast, Maher spoke with actor John Stamos and took aim at liberals who can’t stop thinking or talking about Trump. Maher argued that when opposition to Trump becomes someone’s entire personality, it makes them dull, predictable, and exhausting to be around.

According to Maher, the constant fixation is especially grating because it spills into every conversation, even when no one wants to hear it. While Maher still criticizes Trump in his usual ways, he made it clear that the nonstop outrage culture surrounding Trump has gone too far.

During the discussion, Stamos brought up Maher’s recent dinner at the White House with President Trump. Maher said the president was very different in person than how he’s typically portrayed, suggesting that more direct conversations—rather than endless attacks—might actually be more productive. He also noted that Trump is willing to engage with people who don’t already agree with him.

Maher pointed out that it’s unprecedented for one political figure to dominate national conversation for more than a decade. Stamos agreed, noting that Trump seems to come up in virtually every setting, from casual dinners to serious discussions.

Maher urged people on the left to resist that impulse. He argued that when the first thing someone says is always about Trump, it becomes tiresome and unproductive. While this more measured stance has cost Maher some fans on the left, he deserves credit for stepping away from constant outrage and rejecting the performative anger that often accompanies it.
