LOS ANGELES — Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were tragically killed in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, authorities say, allegedly at the hands of their son Nick Reiner. Friends say tensions escalated during a heated argument at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party the night before the deaths.
Sources told The Post that the confrontation was fueled by Nick’s ongoing struggles with substance abuse. Reports indicate he had refused another round of treatment following at least 17 rehab stints since age 15. “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting erratically, and asking people if they were famous,” a source told People magazine.
The blowup at the party reportedly came less than 24 hours before the deadly attack. A lifelong family friend noted that Rob had expressed concern for Nick’s mental state, saying the family feared what he might do next. Neighbors said Nick had been “supposedly off drugs,” though he had struggled with addiction to opiates and heroin for years.
Another friend explained that Rob and Michele had repeatedly encouraged Nick to seek professional help, but he preferred treatment at home. “They argued about it for years,” the friend said.
Rob, 78, known for his roles in All in the Family and directing classics like Stand By Me and The Princess Bride, left the O’Brien party early with Michele, 68, TMZ reported. The incident followed earlier public disputes, including a loud argument at the Santa Monica Canyon restaurant Giorgio Baldi months prior.
Their daughter Romy, 28, reportedly discovered the parents’ bodies Sunday afternoon. She told investigators that Nick should be considered a suspect, describing him as “dangerous,” sources said. Nick was later arrested and charged with their murders; he is being held without bail and reportedly on suicide watch.
The couple also had another son, Jake, 34, a former TV reporter and podcaster. Rob, who was previously married to actress Penny Marshall, also adopted her daughter, Tracy Marshall Reiner. Tracy, 61, told NBC News, “I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
Nick had struggled with addiction for much of his life, including periods of homelessness. In 2015, he founded an environmental nonprofit called “Save Malibu,” but it lasted less than a year. Rob also helped him produce the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie that same year, though tensions on set were reportedly high. Stunt performer Erik Audé described Nick as “spoiled” and said Rob often appeared frustrated by his behavior.
A family friend suggested Nick may have harbored resentment toward his father, whose own father, Carl Reiner, was a legendary comedian. “I think [Nick] really resented his dad — or maybe hated himself — for not being as talented or prolific,” the source said.
Nick previously admitted to destructive behavior during a 2018 meth-fueled episode, confessing on the “Dopey” podcast that he had damaged property at his parents’ home. Neighbors and security personnel reported that he had been living with his parents for at least the past year, sometimes inviting friends over and acting strangely.
The murders have sent shockwaves through Hollywood. Kathy Bates, who starred in Reiner’s film Misery, told The Post she was “horrified” by the news. Fellow director Ron Howard tweeted, “He proved to be a superlative filmmaker, a supportive colleague, and at all times a dedicated citizen.”
