MCCOMB, Miss. (WKRC) – A man and woman accused of sexually abusing a child and holding her captive in a pit with her deceased sister may be offered plea deals.
According to PEOPLE, 34-year-old Victoria Cox, accused of assisting a man who killed a woman and abducted her two young daughters—later killing one and allegedly keeping the other as a “sex slave”—was offered a plea deal by prosecutors during a court appearance on Monday, October 13.
The report states that 37-year-old Daniel Callihan, in a factual basis filed after pleading guilty to federal charges, admitted to killing 35-year-old Callie Brunett and kidnapping her two daughters from Louisiana on June 11, 2024. Callihan admitted that he transported the children to Mississippi the next day, then returned to Louisiana to pick up Cox before heading back to McComb, Mississippi.
According to PEOPLE, Callihan and Cox both allegedly sexually abused the six-year-old girl before he killed her four-year-old sister “by holding [her] closely against his chest.” Brunett’s relatives reported the children missing after discovering her body on June 13, the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana said.
Authorities launched a joint local, state, and federal search. The six-year-old girl was found the same day. Investigators also located Brunett’s stolen car near the property where the child was being held, ultimately discovering her in a dirt pit alongside her deceased sister.
Cox is not facing federal charges, as her alleged crimes occurred in Mississippi. She has agreed to testify at Callihan’s trial. According to the signed factual basis, Cox corroborated Callihan’s account of sexual abuse against the six-year-old in a post-Miranda interview.
If Cox declines the plea deal, her trial is scheduled to begin on December 8. Callihan is set to be sentenced on November 19. Prosecutors have agreed not to seek the death penalty if he pleads guilty to all charges.
Cox faces the following charges in connection with her alleged actions:
-
Capital murder
-
Kidnapping
-
Sexual battery
The details of Cox’s plea agreement were not disclosed in court. Her defense team will consult with her before deciding whether to accept the offer, according to PEOPLE.
